Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)
Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis is the analysis of well-developed embryos using genetic techniques during in vitro fertilization.

The technique has today achieved the level of both diagnosing chromosomal and single gene disorders and using for HLA typing in embryos.

While a certain number of chromosomes can be examined with the help of FISH in classic PGD, CGH technique has been developed in recent years and results can be obtained for all chromosomes within 24 hours.

Since Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis avoids the termination of a diseased pregnancy after the growth, it especially prevents the family from experiencing psychological problems. In some diseases such as thalassemia, leukemia and immunodeficiency, intrafamilial donor is obtained by the transfer of embryos with appropriate HLA structure to the diseased and bone marrow transplantation can be performed and the treatment of the patient can be provided.
